The Philippines are caught in the midst of the US-China rivalry. To navigate through it, Dr Charmaine Willoughby, Associate Professor of International Studies at De La Salle University, stresses the importance of the EU-ASEAN strategic partnership and the need to move beyond traditional security issues in prioritizing areas of cooperation for Brussels and Manila.

After the EU foreign ministers adopted conclusions on the Indo-Pacific in April 2021, a fully-fledged strategy for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific was presented in September 2021. Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) in Asia brought together senior officials, policy practitioners and eminent experts to unpack what the EU’s announcements mean for the region.
