During the Mughal period, Bengal was a prosperous and strategically important province, ruled by Subahdars (Governors) appointed by the Mughal emperors. It was known as Subah Bengal and was one of the wealthiest regions due to its flourishing trade, agriculture, and textile industry. The governance was based on the Mansabdari system, where officials were responsible for administration, revenue collection, and military duties. Key governors like Shaista Khan expanded Mughal control and promoted trade. However, by the early 18th century, Bengal gained more autonomy under powerful Nawabs, such as Murshid Quli Khan, leading to the eventual decline of direct Mughal influence.
