The defense in the Kouri Richins trial isn't just poking holes—they're driving trucks through them. If you're a juror looking for reasonable doubt, there's plenty to work with. Here's what the defense is presenting.

Their star witness, Carmen Lauber, admitted she was high on meth during the entire time period she claims she was buying fentanyl for Kouri. She tested positive in late January, mid-February, and early March 2022. When the defense asked if she was using the whole time, she said, "I guess so, yes." She told police her memory was "messed up" and "foggy." She said she'd "fried her brain" since sixth grade.

Her story changed. Three drug buys became four. She didn't mention fentanyl until after detectives told her that's what killed Eric. Her supplier Robert Crozier now says in a sworn affidavit he never gave her fentanyl—only oxycontin—and he was detoxing and "out of it" when he originally talked to cops.

The physical evidence? Nineteen items tested for fentanyl—all negative. The pill bottle on Eric's nightstand was never tested. The Moscow mule glasses went through the dishwasher before anyone collected them. The supposed murder weapon is gone.

Video showed detectives telling Carmen the only way to avoid prison is to give them "the details that ensure Kouri gets convicted of murder." They told her to "finish painting the picture." The toxicologist found acetylfentanyl in Eric's system—a marker for street drugs, which the defense argues supports secret use.

Missing interview recordings. The boyfriend's phones returned to him multiple times. Evidence collected years after death. A private investigator driving the investigation. The defense's case that you can't convict someone of poisoning when you can't prove there was poison.
