Homeless in Miami, Florida, Jarvis has spent over 13 years off and on trying to survive in a city where extreme luxury and devastating poverty exist side by side. While tourists see the beaches, Bentleys, and high-rises, people like Jarvis struggle to find a safe place to sleep, a way to eat, and dignity in a system that often fails them. In this video, Jarvis shares the harsh truth about Miami’s homeless shelters, the impossible cost of housing, and how criminalization traps people on the streets instead of helping them.
Jarvis explains how shelters can be degrading and dangerous, making it impossible to bring his kids or even feel like himself. He describes how seniors are filling shelters that now look more like nursing homes, while younger people are pushed back onto the streets. “I don’t want money,” Jarvis says. “I just want to cook a home meal again… to live normal, back to normal.” His words cut through the stereotypes and reveal the real struggles of surviving homelessness in Miami.
Jarvis’s story exposes the daily reality of survival hustles, the stigma of shelters, and the devastating impact of laws that criminalize people for simply existing without a home. Behind every statistic is a human being who wants the same things we all want: safety, dignity, family, and a chance at a normal life.

About Invisible People
Invisible People works to change public perceptions of homelessness and influence policy change. Many people mistakenly blame homelessness on individuals rather than systemic issues like affordable housing shortages, unemployment, childhood trauma, and insufficient wages. This misunderstanding hampers efforts to address homelessness effectively.
Our vision is a world where everyone has a home. We aim to fight homelessness by humanizing it and educating people about the systemic issues behind it. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are shifting the narrative on homelessness.
Our impactful educational content reaches millions monthly, breaking stereotypes and prompting action from governments, brands, nonprofits, and individuals. Yet, the fight continues as homelessness remains a major societal issue that requires immediate action.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since 2008, we’ve been a pioneering and trusted resource in North America and the UK, inspiring action and dialogue around poverty.
