SUPERCUT with PUBLIC COMMENT: The San Francisco Board of Supervisors pass their first South Asian American Heritage Month resolution, becoming the first major city in the United States to do so.

On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Supervisor Bilal Mahmood introduced a resolution to officially recognize South Asian American Heritage Month in the City and County of San Francisco.

San Francisco is the first major U.S. city — and only the third jurisdiction in the nation — to formally establish July 18 to August 17 as South Asian American Heritage Month.

The effort was championed by Mahmood, who is Pakistani American and the first South Asian ever elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, as well as by Commissioner Kudrat Dutta Kontilis, an Indian immigrant and first South Asian appointed to San Francisco's Immigrant Rights Commission.
