Garage Mat from Recycled Tires

Описание к видео Garage Mat from Recycled Tires

A pretty smart way to make use of recycled tires!

Fokes have tried many different ideas on how to reuse old tires some good, some not so good, and some just devastating, such as this story...

In the 1970s, the Army Corps of Engineers gave permission for a group of local interests to create an artificial reef by dumping millions of tires in the ocean off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, Florida:

The project:
In the early 1970s, a group of fishermen, boaters, divers, and politicians sought permission from the Army Corps of Engineers to create an artificial reef by anchoring tires to the ocean floor. The goal was to promote sea life and mimic the environmental benefits of coral reefs.

The consequences:
The project became an environmental disaster. The tires were moved by tropical storms and hurricanes, damaging nearby coral reefs. The tires also choked marine life.

Cleanup efforts:
Cleanup efforts began in 2007 when the United States military took on the project. The military used the project as a training environment for diving and recovery personnel. A civilian corporation took over in 2015 and removed one third of the tires by 2019.

Current status:
As of January 2024, there are still over 500,000 tires left in the reef. A new reef restoration plan is being developed that could include concrete or 3D printed materials.
