In this video, I’m going to talk about the special island in which lots of Tamil peoples lives happily. In the Indian Ocean, there is a small French island called “Reunion”, in which almost 2.5 lakhs Tamils are living. They were sent as a contract employee during the 18th century and settled thereafter even after their contract was finished. The French government gave them Frech citizenship in 1947 since the Reunion island became the overseas administrative state of the French government. Réunion is a beautiful island with big mountains, waterfalls, volcanos, rivers, etc. But there is two active volcanoes on Réunion island and they burst very often. Even though the official language of Réunion island is French, English or other European languages and Tamil also thought at schools and colleges. But the Réunion island has its own language called ‘Réunion Creole’ which is the combination of Tamil, French, Malagasy and some other languages. Since there is a lot of annual rainfall and fertile lands agriculture is the major occupation in Réunion and sugarcane is the most common crop. Although it is a small island its economy was great and its major exports include Sugar, vanilla, seafood, and Rum. The Tamils in Réunion island still follow the Tamil tradition and culture, there is a Sivan, Murugan and Kaali temples and they celebrate Tamil new year, Thaipusam, Pongal and Aadi 18 every year. They still preserve their identity but they are seeking helps from the Tamilnadu government to teach them Tamil language and Tamil music, arts and literature.
