In my preparations for winter i've studded and siped my Maxxis Trepador's to get better grip on ice and snow. The main mod was grooving the sidewalls to allow for better deformation in the tire. The contact often outweighs the tredd pattern when it comes to snow and although it would take a lot to make that the case with these tires, a bigger contact patch is better than less.
They are made of a very soft compound, almost too soft to house a stud in my opinion, but provided they are only used for winter they should be okay. It will be really interesting to see how they perform over the coming months. I think they will be terrible and act like a chain in sugar snow but work well in wet snow that can be compacted. The tred blocks and long contact patch will grip the compacted snow well but dig like a shovel in loose crystals.
