The Embassy of Lithuania in cooperation with the South African Jewish Museum in Cape Town kindly invites you to a following short panel presentations:
"Evolution from Litvak to South African Jew" presented by Gavin Morris, Director of South African Jewish Museum.
This presentation will provide a brief history of South African Jewry’s the Litvak roots and how this Litvak identity shaped the unique nature of the South African Jewish community.
“Lost Shtetl” a unique Lithuanian Jewish Culture and Heritage project” presented by Milda Jakulytė-Vasil, Chief Curator of the Exhibition of the Museum "Lost Shtetl".
While there are various Jewish heritage protection projects conducted in Lithuania, there is a palpable lack of constancy because so many of them are short-term or even one-off efforts. The Lost Shtetl is a Jewish cultural heritage and revival project which has been on-going since 2012, during which time a commemorative complex has been created which includes a multi-faceted slice of Jewish life and history in the town of Šeduva. The project includes the old Jewish cemetery where the dead were buried from the time of the Jewish community's settlement in the 18th century and three Holocaust sites where the Shtetl community's life tragically ended. Situated between these two events, the Lost Shtetl Museum will open its doors in 2023, providing an experience of the aspects of life of the former Jewish community of Šeduva.
“Maceva” project, projected by Sergey Kanovich – founder of Litvak Cemetery Catalogue "Maceva", Founder and Project Leader of "Lost Shtetl" Museum.
Launched in 2011, the Litvak Cemetery Catalogue "Maceva" started the battle against this danger. The Maceva project is a non-profit, non-governmental institution that aims to preserve the Lithuanian Jewish cemeteries and memory of the dead by creating a virtual Jewish cemetery database accessible to everyone across the globe. But the intolerable loss of Jewish cemeteries will not be prevented efficiently in a single effort. All of us can make a change. Let’s find out how.
