The Difference Between a Family Dentist and a General Dentist

The disparities and similarities between the practice of a family dentist and a general dentist are often confused, partly because some of the services that both of them provide to patients also overlap.
General dentists may cater specifically to a certain age group whereas family dentists treat patients of all ages, including toddlers, children and teenagers. The treatment for every age group is different and varies quite a bit. They both can practice preventative and curative care and often do. A family dentist may be great for you if you have children but you may prefer to go to a general dentist. It is really a matter of how much you seem to click with your doctor and what your decision would ultimately be based upon their personalities and expertise. It is extremely important that you get along with your dentist so that you can feel comfortable going as much as twice a year.

How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy

The most important thing is to practice proper dental hygiene. There are two main ways to ensure that you are always keeping on top of your hygiene and look after your teeth and your gums. Practicing dental hygiene is important but you may not be doing them correctly. If you are not brushing your teeth and flossing in the right way, then you may actually be harming your teeth more than you are helping them. Not practicing good oral hygiene can lead to gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath. It may also decrease your overall health and eventually lead to financial trouble.
When buying a new toothbrush go for one with soft bristle since this will not harm your enamel or gums. Hard bristles may result in a cleaner feeling, but they can scar your teeth and gums. When you brush, use a forty-five degree angle and brush with short vertical strokes. It is important that you do it gently so that you do not harm your gums or teeth. Clean the inner part of your teeth and make sure to clean the back of your teeth with the tip of your brush in any crevices that you find. It is important that you find these because these areas are perfect for bacteria to multiply in. Don't put the brush down, you are not done yet. It is important that you brush your tongue because it has a lot of bacteria on it. Use your toothbrush on the roof of your mouth, too. It is important that you do not rush when brushing and that you do it at least twice a day for between two to three minutes. Do not use the amount of toothpaste that is used in commercials. It should be pea-size and you should not put any more on your toothbrush while you are in the middle of brushing your teeth.

Flossing is also really important. Brushing does not get everything that you need to get out of your teeth to keep them healthy. To make sure that your teeth are always as clean as possible you absolutely need to floss. If you find flossing very uncomfortable, you may be able to get floss picks which make the process a little more straightforward than the type of floss that comes in a packet.
There are different types of floss available. The type that you ultimately decide to get depends on the gaps between your teeth. Waxed floss is a little thicker than floss without wax so plan accordingly. The type of floss does not affect how effective flossing is but it does affect how comfortable you are with flossing so don't worry if you have to give it a bit of time. It is totally okay if you have to try a few until you find one that you are comfortable with.
When it comes to the act of flossing, you need to put the floss between your teeth and take it all the way up to your gum line. Do it slowly, you do not want to accidentally hurt yourself. Move the floss around the curve of your tooth in a C shape and slide vertically on each tooth. Make sure that you change the bit of floss once every few teeth.
Flossing takes practice and might seem like an impossibly long process when you first start doing it. Once you are used to it you will see how much better your teeth look and how easy it is to floss. It should not take you more than a few minutes a day to floss -- but you do need practice to get there. It may seem long at first but slowly you will get used to it. It is okay if the first time you floss a little blood comes out since that might just mean some inflammation. You can address this by continuing to floss for at least a week straight.
