After pouring a new foundation, proper preparation is critical before you can install any flooring. Owner Gabriel Brinkman of Step Up Construction walks you through the essential steps we take to prepare a fresh concrete slab for hardwood, tile, vinyl, or other flooring materials in San Jose homes.

Why Proper Prep Matters:

Many flooring failures start with improper foundation preparation. In San Jose's climate, moisture issues are particularly critical—installing flooring over a slab that hasn't fully cured, or that lacks proper moisture barriers, can lead to warping, cupping, mold growth, and premature material failure. The Bay Area's specific environmental conditions require strict adherence to manufacturer specifications and California Building Code requirements.

Direct-to-Slab Installation: Suitable for tile, luxury vinyl, and some engineered flooring. Requires a perfectly flat surface (within 1/8" over 10 feet) and verified moisture levels below manufacturer thresholds.

Subfloor System: Required for solid hardwood and preferred for engineered wood. Involves installing pressure-treated sleepers or floor joists, adding insulation and vapor barriers, then laying plywood subfloor. This raises the finished floor height by 2-4 inches but provides superior stability and moisture protection.

Underlayment Application: For floating floors and certain tile applications, specialized underlayment provides sound dampening, minor leveling, and additional moisture protection.
