THE GREEN GLOVE starring Glenn Ford, George Macready, Geraldine Brooks and Sir Cedric Hardwick is not a western. It’s a mystery movie filmed on location in France starring Glenn Ford. Since Ford is one of our favorites here, and this is a good film, we thought we’d showcase it for you in a beautifully restored print. Of course, Glenn starred in many classic westerns including ARIZONA, the original 3:10 TO YUMA, LUST FOR GOLD, THE VIOLENT MEN, COWBOY, CIMARRON, and THE SACKETTS miniseries, among others. Ford had a quiet, credible on-screen presence, could ride horses like a pro and, some say, he was THE FASTEST GUN ALIVE. He even starred in a movie of that name.

Glenn made films in other genres, too. Film Noir, mysteries and comedies. Perhaps his most famous role was that of Johnny Farrow, a small time gambler in GILDA, opposite a ravishing Rita Hayworth, as his ex-wife in the title role, and smarmy, villainous George Macready as Hayworth’s new husband.

Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth appeared together several more times. Ford and Macready were also reunited as hero and villain in our presentation, 1952’s THE GREEN GLOVE, a mystery/adventure with a bit of romance. Set shortly after the end of WWII, Ford stars as an ex-GI who returns to France searching for the Green Glove, a priceless jeweled religious artifact. Ford’s not the only person on the hunt. Yep, it’s suave George Macready at his best as a Nazi collaborator. Ford hooks up with tour guide Geraldine Brooks and the chase is on.

The director is 5 time Oscar nominated Rudolph Mate. He’d been nominated as the cinematographer of COVER GIRL starring Rita Hayworth and FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT for Alfred Hitchcock, plus 3 other films. He also shot Rita and Glenn in their noir classic, GILDA. And Rita, again, in THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI. When Mate left his camera to direct, he helmed the classic D.O.A. with Edmund O’Brien, THE VIOLENT MEN with Glenn Ford, BRANDED with Alan Ladd, and WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE. As a director, Mate still looked for stunning locations and filled his movies with creative camerawork. The climax in THE GREEN GLOVE, set in the Alps, is a thrilling chase over sheer rock cliffs with Ford fleeing with the treasure. Extraordinary filmmaking. The screenplay was by Charles Beaumont, one of Hitchcock’s favorite writers. The narration is by John Dehner.

At the time of filming, Glenn Ford was married to actress Eleanor Powell but had a wild, intense love affair with Geraldine Brooks. See if you can see the chemistry between the two of them.
