This video shows how can an average or starter weapon with a passive skill can really help you to kill Dark Avatar of the Serpent, without relaying in a lucky drop.

I'd recommend to use T'amok's Breath if you have a non-elementary weapon like Forge Hammer to have a 50% change to attack Fire, if you are lucky, you could come across the Slaver's Codex to boost your mace with a 10% attack (if I recall correctly in the run), don't forget to increase the main weapon level of you choice every time you have a chance in the sanctuary (machete icon, not the crossed one).

As for the battle, you have to kill the 3 Serpent Cultist first or they will serve the Dark Avatar to heal himself, you have 30 sec. to do so; the attacks of the Dark Avatar left hand inflict poison, always watch it, specially if he missed it, he'll jump to smash you with his right hand, don't get greedy with the attacks and always keep one stamina point; also save one to roll off the circle when he summons his Cultist.
