Csepel Művek (pronounced "Cheh-pel Mee-vek") was once the largest industrial complex in Hungary, a massive powerhouse that employed tens of thousands of people and produced everything from iconic Csepel bicycles and motorcycles, to cars, tanks, and steel structures for all of Europe. Its founder, Manfréd Weiss, laid the foundations of an empire in the 19th century that survived two World Wars and the communist era.
Today, however, the picture is starkly different. This video takes you on a unique journey into the depths of Csepel Művek, a place where steel once roared and now silence reigns. We explore the decline of this giant, which failed to survive the post-socialist transformation. Many of its historic halls have already been demolished, others are quietly crumbling, and those that still stand have become a refuge for the homeless.
