Blue belt hits GATOR ROLL in BJJ competition (and more) — full match breakdown/commentary at BJJTour

Jiu Jitsu tournament commentary from BJJTour, Santa Cruz on September 9th! Here I competed in 3 matches in the lightweight / blue / master 1 division, winning all three for gold. This competition came the week after I got 2nd in the 37-man featherweight / master 1 division at IBJJF World Master in Las Vegas.

At BJJTour, I decided to work on some new techniques that I’ve been practicing at Caio Terra Academy (my home gym in San Jose, California), and I had 3 goals:
Hit a “Meregali sweep” (yoko sumi gaeshi from lasso)
Hit a tarikoplata/kimuraplata (from John Danaher’s Kimura Enter the System instructional)
Hit a knee drive to mount transition (from the Dynamic Pinning section of John Danaher’s half guard passing instructional)

I was able to get the Meregali sweep twice , but not the other two… However, I was also able to get a gator roll, which I learned from Tainan Dalpra and Gui Mendes at an Art of Jiu Jitsu seminar in Nagoya, Japan during the 2023 IBJJF Asian Championship. Cole Abate and many other AOJ athletes were there as well, teaching various techniques and sparring.

With this competition, I’m now up to 54 tournaments and 210 matches at blue belt since April 2022, and fly to Sao Paulo, Brasil in a couple days to compete at IBJJF Sul-Americano to continue to sharpen my technique.
