Springtime when the grass is greening up and growing rapidly it tends to be low in magnesium. Livestock that are in milk, lactating, and in poor body condition or older cattle can be more susceptible to grass tetany. In this case, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Start feeding magnesium a few weeks before grazing to prevent this disease which can cause an uncoordinated gait, nervousness, muscle spasms, staggering, decreased milk yield, and twitching skin.
