Shimada Kiln

Check out a special pottery studio in the Iwami region of Shimane. This studio has been around for almost 100 years and artisans here specialize in the traditional "shinotsukuri" style of pottery. A style which is characteristically known for creating very big pieces by building them in sections upon each other. But what is really cool is the hill ascending kiln that they use to fire their pieces. The pieces location in the kiln determines the type of coloring/ pattern the glaze will turn out to after firing, meaning that each piece has a very unique color and pattern. The kiln is fired 5 times a year and every May 3rd ~ 5th they have a festival where they open up the kiln giving visitors a peek at the just fired pieces.
