The Legend of Hyrule: Temple of E – Lost Woods

This track is an arrangement of Lost Woods / Tarm Ruins from The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, as well as Follow Fi and the Goddess Statue theme from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, played on various hardware synthesizers.

The Legend of Hyrule: Temple of E is a series of tracks from the Legend of Zelda series, arranged for and recorded with mostly analog synthesizers as well as old digital sound modules. In addition, some tracks also use custom built sound modules (the "Emulight" modules in the hardware list), like e.g. a custom 12bit stereo percussion sampler or a custom analog supersaw module with 8 VCOs and Moog ladder filters.

This track is truly special: it uses a virtual Shakuhachi from the Yamaha VL1-m V2. The VL1-m V2 is a physical modelling synthesizer, which tries to emulate the physics of acoustic instruments. This allows very detailed control over sound parameters and allows extremely expressive performances. In this track it was used for an expressive Shakuhachi performance which is essentially impossible to achieve with modern sample libraries.

This track also uses a custom water sound effect that I recorded a long time ago from some small stream in a forest.

The quality of over 30 years old sampled acoustic instruments with samples that are less than a megabyte large in total is quite remarkable, especially the guitar from the Proteus/1 as well as the flutes from the EIIIxp. Of course the key ingredient to a good sound is good effects processing, like a good choice of delay and reverb, which was done with a KORG A1 effects processor. And of course nothing can beat the magic sound of an MS-20 analog synthesizer "flute".
