Photographing a Dreamy Seascape at Sunset

Photographing seascapes involves capturing the beauty and drama of the ocean and its surroundings. Key elements include timing, composition, and lighting. The golden hours of sunrise and sunset provide soft, warm light, enhancing the colors and textures of the landscape. Long exposure techniques can create a dreamy, smooth water effect, while fast shutter speeds freeze the motion of crashing waves. Incorporating foreground elements like rocks or driftwood adds depth and interest. Paying attention to tides and weather conditions is crucial for achieving the desired mood. Patience and creativity are essential to capturing the ever-changing essence of the sea.

When I shoot seascapes or water in general, I like to use a long exposure to smooth out the water. I believe that's what makes an image look like a photo and not just a picture. At this location however, I took it a step further. I used a Circular Polarizer Filter and a Neutral Density Filter at the same time. The polarizer helped darken the sky to bring back some detail and the ND helped increase the exposure time to 30 seconds to get that dreamy smooth water that I really like.
