The French defence industry is actively pitching the next-generation MICA-NG (Missile d'Interception, de Combat et d'Autodéfense - Nouvelle Génération) air-to-air missile for India's Rafale fleet. The missile, designed to replace the current MICA RF/IIR variants, promises enhanced range and performance, but the Indian Air Force (IAF) faces a strategic choice as it advances its indigenous missile programmes.
While official figures remain undisclosed, French sources claim the MICA-NG will deliver approximately 40% more range compared to the current MICA's 60-80 km envelope. This would place the missile's reach in the 84-112 km bracket-roughly on par with India's homegrown Astra Mkl missile.
The Astra Mkl is already entering squadron service, but the IAF has set its sights firmly on the Astra MkII and MkIII variants. Astra MkII, with a planned range of around 160 km, and Astra MkIII, incorporating a solid-fuel ducted ramjet (SFDR) for extended reach beyond 300 km, represent a generational leap in India's beyond- visual-range (BVR) capabilities.

Analysts suggest that while the MICA-NG could offer an incremental upgrade for Rafale users, its value addition for the IAF may be limited, especially given the cost considerations and India's growing emphasis on indigenisation. Integrating Astra Mkll and Mkill across frontline fighters, including Rafales, Su-30MKIs, and Tejas Mk1A/MkII, would ensure standardisation, reduce logistical burdens, and strengthen India's defence self-reliance.

For France, pushing the MICA-NG is part of Dassault and MBDA'S broader effort to maintain a long-term weapons ecosystem for Rafale operators worldwide. For India, however, the calculus appears different: investing in the Astra family not only provides comparable or superior capability but also aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat drive in defence.
As Rafales continue to form a crucial part of the IAF's strike and air dominance capability, the decision on future missile armament will carry long-term implications. While MICA-NG may be considered for fleet commonality, the IAF's better bet lies in fielding Astra MkII and Mklll as its primary BVR arsenal.
