TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL & HOMILY

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

A proclamation of the holy gospel according to St. Mark. Glory to you Lord.

When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed closed to the sea. One of the synagogue officials, name Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him saying, "My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live." He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him. While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official's house arrived and said, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?" Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid; just have faith." He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. So he went in and said to them, "Why this commotion? Why this weeping? The child is not dead but asleep." And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out. He took along the child's father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was. He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise!" The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. At that they were utterly astounded. He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

It is really tough being faithful today. And I’m talking about just putting trust in someone else and believing that everything is going to be all right. It can be said of spouses, teachers, doctors, lawyers, and even the church. Divorce rates are climbing and it seems that too many people rush in before they truly know the other before making a commitment. We hear about such things as teachers carrying guns to school for protection. There are cases of malpractice with doctors or even some practicing without even being qualified. And we have heard about the abuse in our churches. These are all scandals that have rocked our world and even our ability to trust in the other. In today's gospel we hear about an official who seeks out Jesus. He seeks out Jesus even though he knew that it would not make him very popular. Jesus was suspect. But he had faith that Jesus could make a difference. He acted and it paid off. Even when he was told that his little girl had died he continued to trust and to have faith. We are challenged today to trust in Jesus' workings in our lives. We can come to mass each week but it can be a hollow empty act or it can be transformative. We can listen to all of the stories that we hear in scripture we can hear about the accounts of things that happened thousands of years ago or we can trust and believe that it will make a difference in our lives even today. We can let Jesus take us by the hand and lift us up or we can just give up. It made a difference in the life of Jairus. And in the life of his little girl. Be faithful. Amen.
