For NICU nurse Jenn Mann, caring for the tiniest patients isn’t just her professional calling — it’s part of her own story.

Jenn has been with Novant Health Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital since graduating from nursing school, finding purpose in helping fragile newborns grow and thrive. But three years into her NICU career, she found herself on the other side.

During a routine scan at 35 weeks, providers discovered an issue with her daughter’s bowel that required surgery the day after delivery. Even as a NICU nurse, Jenn felt the shock, fear and uncertainty every parent knows in moments like these.

What carried her through was trust in her team and the comfort of knowing her daughter was exactly where she needed to be. Jenn’s daughter spent 10 days in the NICU — short compared to many, but an eternity for any parent. Jenn saw firsthand how her team shows up not just clinically but emotionally, holding space for every feeling and every unknown.

Today, her daughter is a happy, healthy four-and-a-half-year-old.

That experience changed Jenn as a nurse. She has always cared deeply for her patients and families, but now she understands their fear in a way she never could have before. She makes it a point to slow down and truly listen to them, knowing it makes a difference.
