While Bitter Heaven isn't an RPG in the traditional sense, like an RPG, if you don't upgrade your character, you will become under powered and struggle.

There's two ways to get upgrades.

1. Find them in the environment.

2. Purchase them at the armory.

At the start of the game there will be 3 HP, and Strength upgrades available to purchase.
After that, additional upgrades will be available to purchase after defeating boss2, boss4 and boss6.

As the game is pretty generous with money, it's recommended to buy all upgrades as they become available.

In order to upgrade your spoon, you will need to find the right metals in chests. This really isn't necessary if you only want to beat the story.
However, if you want to beat the challenge rooms and especially if you want to take on the post game super bosses, trust me, you're definitely gonna want to upgrade your **** spoon (:
