In this fascinating talk, John Tate argues that it has led to a re-concentration of voice back to the commercially and politically interested, encouraged by 'winner take all' Internet economics. In this context, high quality public media remain vitally important – but only so long as their independence is protected.

John Tate was for six years the BBC's Director of Policy & Strategy, leading and securing the Corporation's £23bn funding deal to 2017 as well as chairing its commercial business BBC Studios & Post-Production. John has also worked for McKinsey & Company and is currently Chief Operating Officer of Tamkeen - a company which plans, develops, and delivers projects on behalf of Abu Dhabi's Executive Affairs Authority. John is a non-executive director of the medical technology firm Medopad, and a National Advisory Council member for an education charity he helped establish, TeachFirst.
