Bright shades of magenta and pink in this animation of satellite imagery reveal a vast swath of blowing dust across Mongolia, China and Russia. The data were acquired by the Himwari-9 satellite between March 20 and 22 of 2023.

The Gobi Desert dust storm was lofted by strong winds produced by a tight gradient between high and low atmospheric pressure systems. As the dust storm moved into eastern China on March 22, visibility plummeted in Beijing, and air quality sensors there measured soaring levels of particulate matter.

The luminescent colors and swirling patterns in the animation demonstrate how imagery at the intersection of art and science can provide views of dramatic atmospheric events that are both beautiful and revealing. The false color view is created using different wavelengths of infrared light to distinguish airborne dust from clouds during both day and nighttime.
