2018 Once in a lifetime Super Blue Blood Moon in the World ECLIPSE SUPERMOON

January 31 brings a lunar trifecta: the super blue blood Moon! This full moon is the third in a series of “supermoons,” when the Moon is closer to Earth in its orbit -- known as perigee -- and about 14 percent brighter than usual. It’s the second full moon of the month, commonly known as a “blue moon.”

The super blue moon will pass through Earth’s shadow to give viewers in the right location a total lunar eclipse. While the Moon is in the Earth’s shadow it will take on a reddish tint, known as a “blood moon.” The first time this has all occurred since 1866!

The eclipse will begin when the moon enters the darkest part of Earth's shadow, called the umbra, at 3:48 a.m. PST (11:48 UT). From that point, the umbral shadow will spread across the moon’s disk from left to right. Totality begins at 4:52 a.m. PST (12:52 UT), when the moon will be fully engulfed in the umbral shadow and will turn a deep shade of orange-red.

Totality will last as long as an hour and 12 minutes, depending on your location, with the rest of the visible eclipse ending at 7:11 a.m. PST (15:11 UT).

WHAT MAKES THE MOON TURN RED?
Although the moon is in shadow during a total eclipse, sunlight shining through Earth's atmosphere gets bent, or refracted, toward the red part of the spectrum and is cast onto the moon's surface. As a result, the lunar disk goes from a dark gray color during the partial phase of the eclipse to a reddish-orange color during totality.

The moon's color during totality can vary considerably depending on the amount of dust in Earth's atmosphere at the time. Active volcanoes spewing tons of ash into the upper atmosphere, for instance, can trigger deep blood-red eclipses.

While no one can predict exactly what color we'll see before each eclipse, based on current activity, expectations are that this total eclipse will be a dramatic brilliant orange.

L'éclipse commencera lorsque la lune entre dans la partie la plus sombre de l'ombre de la Terre, appelée l'Ombre, à 3:48 heure du Pacifique (11h48 TU). À partir de ce point, l'ombre ombrelle s'étendra sur le disque lunaire de gauche à droite. La Totalité commence à 4h52 HNP (12h52 TU), lorsque la lune sera complètement engloutie dans l'ombre ombrelle et deviendra une profonde nuance d'orange-rouge.
