Avalanche Barriers Above an Icelandic Town - 4K Drone Fooatge

1995 was a terrible year for the whole Icelandic nation when two avalanches fell on towns in the west fjords, only 8 months apart. First the Súðavík avalanche on 16 January, killing 14 people, including eight children, and injuring twelve. Then the Flateyri avalanche on 26 October the same year, killing 20 people.

The disasters had a profound effect on the nation and sparked a massive buildup of avalanche dams to protect towns in danger zones.

These are the Avalanche barriers above the town Siglufjörður, Northern Iceland, built after the 1995 disasters but it's still an ongoing project and there are still towns in Iceland that need more protection.
