Open-air markets like this one in the southern city of Shenzhen are having a moment in China these days.

As China leaves the shadow of COVID-19, consumers are eager to shop in-person again.

And these outdoor stalls that sell everything from cakes to vinyl records have popped up in large numbers to meet that pent-up shopping demand.
Vendors say stalls are a low-cost way to run a retail business.

As for consumers, the open-air markets promise a fun experience different from malls and shopping complexes.

In addition to the downtown region, 41 areas have also been designated in parks across the city to host weekend markets as they gain popularity among local residents.
