Warning : 5 Dangers of Using Regular Thread to Clean Teeth

Some people resort to using regular sewing thread to clean their teeth because it’s readily available at home. However, this can lead to oral and dental diseases and leaves bacteria and germs inside the mouth.

Dr. Mohamed Adel, a specialist in oral and dental medicine, stated that using regular thread to clean teeth can transmit diseases to the mouth and harm the gums. Therefore, it should not be relied upon as a tool for removing food particles stuck between the teeth due to the following risks:

1. Contamination:

Regular thread is contaminated and unsterilized, which harms dental health and may transmit diseases to the mouth, leading to various complications later on.

2. Bacteria and Germs:

It causes the spread of bacteria and germs in the mouth after use. These microbes spread to the areas where the thread was used, leading to oral and gum infections.

3. Gum Damage:

Because it’s not made of materials designed for easy sliding like nylon, it doesn’t pass smoothly between the teeth. As a result, it requires force to insert, which can cause cuts and inflammation in the gums.

4. Ineffectiveness:

It’s not effective at removing food debris trapped in tight spaces between the teeth. If these remnants are left, they form a plaque layer that hardens over time and can only be removed by a dentist. This can lead to gum inflammation, swelling, and bleeding during brushing.

5. Tooth Decay:

Ordinary threads are made of loosely woven fibers, which can break apart and leave pieces between the teeth. These remnants attract bacteria, causing gum inflammation, and eventually leading to tooth decay and dental nerve infections.
