Hi I’m Erin and welcome to the Bad Denim Review. So this week we are starting a new sub-series, where we look at the detail of what goes into a fantastic pair of jeans.

Today we’re going to look at one of the key building blocks: the back pocket. It’s the beautiful union of form and function. It will hold your coins and receipts yet it also serves the very important purpose of balancing and flattering your backside; together with the yoke—and the angle of the back rise. Basically the angle of the back rise and yoke puts shaping into the back of the jean, giving more room in the seat, while the size and positioning of the back pocket gives the look of the jean and balances the bottom.

Too small a back pocket will look cheap and serve to make your behind look bad, things will look unbalanced. Here is an example of, in my opinion, a bad back pocket (BooHoo jeans). Click like if you agree.

When it’s done right it’s largely inconspicuous and doesn’t under or overwhelm. Let’s have a look at the classic 501 to see the correct proportions for the back of the jean.

Now bigger back pockets are largely a design decision and favoured by a lot of Scandinavian brands. Some people feel that it flattens their behind, but personally, I quite like a big back pocket.

The placement should be so that the bottom corner is resting on the sort of “end” or crease of your bum (bottom). There are some exceptions though - the boyfriend style will typically be slouchy and below this. And to give a more 70’s retro look the pocket will be moved intentionally higher on the bottom.

The angle of the pocket is also very important to the look of the jean. The classic Levi's 501 pocket is actually pretty highly angled when you properly look at it. See all the space in the middle in between the lower back pocket corners? When the jean is tight in the top block this gives a pert bum (bottom).

Also worth mentioning is very stretchy styles will look to have small back pockets when they are on the hanger, but they obviously stretch out when worn. So with practice, you may be able to just look and see if the pocket will suit you or not but the best way when getting to grips with the back pocket is to try it on.

Let’s look at some vintage pocket shapes for reference. So everyone is basically designing off a reimagining of the original back pocket, from Levi’s. This stitching is called the arcuate.

Here is the standard Wrangler back pocket, very similar, but the back pocket is typically a little bigger on vintage Wrangler.

Lee owns the curved look - they do a sort of trademark tulip style.

Also, side note - the back pocket will not be the same dimensions on every style within a brand, but it usually follows the same general proportion and design.
