This video advises how to set up and check over your second hand purchase to make sure it is safe to use, and that you can proceed without damaging the machine. Resist the temptation to jump in and knit without checking the machine first, as you could damage it irreparably.

This is demonstrated on a Knitmaster 700 model, but would apply to all models of machine that use a drum patterning mechanism - now uniformly sold under the brand name of Silver Reed, but formerly sold as Studio, Singer, Knitmaster and Empisal.
