Описание к видео Solder and Flux Melting under the Microscope

Have you ever seen flux dance on top of a molten ball of solder? Well now you have!

Timestamps:
0:05 - Initial solder melting.
1:27 - First Flux drops
1:55 - Leidenfrost Flux balls
7:05 - Adding second piece of solder
7:26 - Flux core solder wire

In this video, I was testing out a new hot plate that I found on Amazon. It was pretty cheap and didn't look very safe, so I decided to see what it could do. The plate definitely gets hot, hot enough to melt solder at least (and my ESD mats). The solder was placed into a small metal container which was in direct contact with the hot plate. The hotplate only has one setting, ON, and no buttons, which means it just turns on when you plug it in.

I started by melting a chunk of solder in the plate and that seemed to work well. I noticed some gunk on the melted solder and though, "hey, what if I put flux on it?". So I put flux on it. No-clean liquid flux, to be specific. The flux seemed to do something to the solder, but also had its own interesting thing going on. The flux droplets exhibited the Leidenfrost effect, or what happens when a cold(er) liquid meets a hot(ter) surface. Most would bounce around until they got stuck in a hole in the corner of the metal container. Some would explode on contact though.

Next, I added a bit more solder before switching over to some flux core solder wire. The flux in the flux core solder is rosin-based, which is why it leaves behind an golden-ish residue after it melts. The rosin flux is also exhibiting the Leidenfrost effect on the surface of the solder, I think (or perhaps it is something completely different). What I do know is that it looks amazing! I was absolutely hypnotized by what it was doing. I hope you enjoy it as well!
