"With regards to yesterday, I will mention that we did provide some additional supplies, we delivered the e-mails from yesterday so indeed we do have contact with the crew through our intermediaries here for yesterday but we were not permitted to see them yesterday. We're hopeful we will see them today, we're continuing to deliver the same e-mails that have come in - I have another pack this morning - we will continue to process (the mail) but my concept is to maintain contacts with the crew."

STORYLINE:

China continues to hold the 24 crew members from the U-S spy plane that made an emergency landing on Hainan island just over a week ago after colliding with a Chinese jet that was tracking it in international airspace off the China coast.

The leader of the US delegation on Hainan Island is US Army Brigadier General Neal Sealock, the US Embassy's Military Attache in China.

Sealock said on Monday that he continues to seek twice-daily access to the air crew.

He said the U-S delegation were not able to see the crew on Sunday, but were able to deliver some supplies and e-mails from home.

But Sealock was optimistic that the delegation would be allowed to see the crew today (Monday).

Chinese authorities have confirmed they questioned the U-S crew.

They accuse the pilot of breaking the law by making an emergency landing at a Chinese air base without applying in advance for permission.

The Chinese have blamed the American aircraft for the collision, in which the Chinese pilot is missing and presumed killed.

The incident has added new tensions to a relationship already strained over trade and U-S policy toward Taiwan.

The United States is expected to make a decision this month about whether it will sell advanced weapons the Taiwanese have requested in annual arms talks in Washington.

China has been aggressively lobbying American leaders not to approve the weapons sales, warning that such deals would severely harm U.S.-China
relations.

U-S Secretary of State Colin Powell said the United States was "sorry" about the pilot's fate, but said the United States should not and will not apologise for the collision.
