STORYLINE:
Muslim Iraqis living in Baghdad were preparing for the holy month of Ramadan on Sunday, in the face of tight security in the capital and rising prices.
During Ramadan, observant Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, but then often have large meals breaking the fast, with special foods and sweets.
Al-Shorja market, a main shopping outlet in central Baghdad, has been the target of several blasts and sabotage during the last year.
AP Television filmed shoppers busy making last minute purchases of foodstuffs before the beginning of the holy month, due for some to start on Monday.
One shopper, U.M. Hussein, said prices are too high and that civil servants "cannot buy all their necessities" due to limited incomes.
In the city's Karrada neighbourhood, residents were stocking up on fruit and vegetables.
And business was thriving at the 'Juwad al-Shakarji Market for Sweets'.
Iraqi Sunni Muslims will start fasting on Monday for Ramadan, which falls on the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, but Iraqi Shiite Muslims have not announced yet when they will start their fasting.
Muslims see the fast of Ramadan as a means to intensify worship and contemplation as well as strengthening ties within the family and community.
