Let's look at the transistor radios in this Spring and Summer 1961 Sears catalog. Sears was pretty effective in selling radios considering the relative ease with which they are found in the collector market. They also had televisions and this other high-tech gear, as you can see. Sears was never the highest of high-tech, but they provided good quality at good value longer than anyone in retail I can think of. And that is something.

Here's a transistor radio--with a built-in phonograph. While most of the early Sears transistor radios were made by Arvin in Indiana, this one was made in St. Louis at Bell Products. Here it is in the manufacturer's brochure. Offered as a record player only, or, like Sears offered it, with a built-in radio too.

Some hi-fi sets from Sears. Pretty nice, I'd say, but I wouldn't have thought so at the time, being a kind of hi-fi snob. And record players. Phonographs to carry to a friend's house, to the beach, or down to the basement to practice the latest dance moves without being watched by mommmm.

And they sold records too. And tape recorders. Ah but here's what we're looking at today. Transistor radios. The coat-pocket size Medalist at $25 came in black or ice blue. The large shirt-pocket next to it was $22 and could be had in black, ice-blue, or coral. And on the right, the standard shirt-pocket model aimed at the kids for $16 which came in black or mint green. They later added a red version. These shirt-pockets are all American made. I see they are closing out their 1201 model for just $13.50. That one only came in gray.

And the larger transistors are at the bottom. Full, rich tone, I am sure. But kind of square, you know? Looks like your dad's radio.

And Sears had shortwave radios too. And CB radios and walkie talkies. Then you turn the page and it's porch lights. That's Sears. You never quite knew what was on the next page. They had everything. Well, let's just keep going. Chandeliers. Oh man, we're miles from radios now. Look at all this stuff. Table saws, plumbing pipe. File cabinets, outboard motors.

Sears Roebuck and Company. We were lucky to have them.
