Appartamento Borgia – Borgia Apartment

Lo spagnolo Rodrigo de Borja y Doms (italianizzato in Borgia), eletto papa alla morte di Innocenzo VIII assumendo il nome di Alessandro VI, lega il suo nome a parte della residenza utilizzata durante il suo pontificato (1492 - 1503).
L’Appartamento Borgia comprende sei ambienti di rilievo monumentale fatti ristrutturare e decorare da quel pontefice, che ospitano oggi parte della Collezione d’Arte Contemporanea dei Musei Vaticani inaugurata da Paolo VI (1973): le Sale delle Sibille e del Credo nella Torre Borgia; quelle delle Arti Liberali, dei Santi e dei Misteri, allineate nell’ala edificata da Niccolò V e definite “camere segrete” nel Diario di Johannes Burckhard, maestro delle cerimonie di papa Alessandro; infine la Sala dei Pontefici nell’ala più antica di Niccolò III.
La decorazione pittorica delle “camere segrete”, vale a dire riservate a uso privato del pontefice, venne affidata al pittore umbro Bernardino di Betto, meglio noto con l’appellativo di Pinturicchio.

The Spanish Rodrigo de Borja y Doms (Italianised as “Borgia”), elected as pope following the death of Innocent VIII with the name Alexander VI, lends his name to part of the residence used during his papacy (1492 - 1503).
The Borgia Apartment consists of six monumental spaces, renovated and decorated at Pope Alexander VI’s behest, which now house part of the Vatican Museums’ Collection of Contemporary Art inaugurated by Paul VI (1973): the Room of the Sibyls and the Room of the Creed are in the Borgia Tower, whereas those of the Liberal Arts, the Saints and the Mysteries are all aligned in the wing built by Nicholas V and defined as “secret rooms” in the Diary of Johannes Burckhard, Pope Alexander’s master of ceremonies; finally, the Room of the Pontiffs is in the oldest wing, built by Nicholas III.
The pictorial decoration of the “secret rooms” – those reserved for private use by the Pontiff – was entrusted to the Umbrian painter Bernardino di Betto, better known as Pinturicchio.
