Connecting unrelated languages: determining the locus of shared linguistic representations using cross-language structural priming.

SEMINAR ABSTRACT
Priming is a ubiquitous phenomenon in cognition. In language, we are regularly primed to use words and structures based on previous experience, but curiously, multilingual speakers can be primed across languages. For instance, Spanish-English bilinguals are more likely to produce an English passive (e.g., 'the dog was tickled by the monkey') after hearing a Spanish equivalent (e.g., 'la rana fue pateada por el oso' = "the frog was kicked by the bear"), suggesting a degree on integration between languages in the minds of multilingual individuals. While the effect is robust, its locus is unclear. In this talk I present recent experimental work that attempts to identify the locus of priming using typologically diverse languages - Tagalog, Indonesian, and English - to determine the locus of priming.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Evan Kidd was awarded his BBSc(Hons) in 1999 and his PhD (Psycholinguistics) in 2004, both from La Trobe University. Over his career he has worked at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, The University of Manchester, and La Trobe University. He came to the ANU in 2012, originally working in the Research School of Psychology. In 2022 he moved over to SLLL to take up a position as Professor of Linguistics.

Evan's research is in psycholinguistics. He works both on language acquisition (inc. first language acquisition, bilingualism, & second language acquisition) and adult language processing. His recent research has focused on individual differences in language acquisition and use, the relationship between language acquisition and on-line sentence processing in crosslinguistic perspective, and the influence of typological diversity on sentence planning and production. Accordingly, his research group works on several typologically-diverse languages. He also have a keen interest in how language interfaces with other social and cognitive processes. Along these lines, over the past 10 years or so he and his students have been investigating the relationship between language acquisition and symbolic play.
