Bottle Farm: Grow fresh food on your window - The kit that turns any used plastic bottle into a beautiful indoor farm.

Grow fresh food at home

Supermarket produce is wrapped in plastic and shipped across the world, which has a large environmental impact. It also loses up to half of its nutrient content by the time it reaches the shelves.

Bottle Farm is good for you, and for the planet.

Self-watering
Bottle Farm uses Hydroponic technology. The plants grow in water instead of soil. That means they grow faster, and don’t need regular watering.

No plug required
Sunlight provides all the energy your plants need. That means no wasted electricity.

Space-efficient
Bottle Farm is designed with two orientations, so it can hang or sit anywhere you have space.

Good for the planet
Bottle Farm is made from over 95% recycled materials. We are also pledging to minimise and offset 100% of our carbon footprint.

Support your taller plants
Taller plants need extra support as they grow. Place the Grow Clips on your window to support plants like tomatoes and chillis.

The Kit

Grow Baskets provide the structure for plants to grow on and give the bottle walls added strength. They're made from recycled plastic.

Simply cut the slot using the template provided, and click them into your bottle.

Grow Pods are made from recycled coconut husk. When they come in contact with water, they expand to provide the right environment for seeds to grow into beautiful plants. Drop them straight into the Grow Baskets.

We designed the Bottle Stands to work in two different ways. Use yours to grow on any flat surface. Or flip the stands round, slot in the suction pads and grow directly on a window - delicious food in otherwise wasted space.

The Bottle Stands are also made from recycled plastic.

Grow Clips stick to the window above your Bottle Farm. Add and adjust them as your taller plants grow up the window. They're useful when growing things like tomatoes and chillies.

Bottle Farm uses a technology called Hydroponics. Fill the bottle with tap water, and add the Plant Fuel powder. This provides plants with all the micronutrients needed for quick, healthy growth. No soil required!

Growing

You can grow a wide variety of herbs, vegetables and fruit in Bottle Farm. You can choose to plant your own seeds, or use the ones provided in your kit.

Bottle Farm comes with enough Grow Pods, Plant Fuel and seeds for 2 grows - that's 2 full Bottle Farms worth of food. Once you run out, just pick whichever flavour Grow Pack you want to try next, and grow again!

Rewards
One 'Grow' is one full Bottle Farm worth of food (four Grow Baskets worth). We'll be sending out a backer survey so that you can choose which flavour Grow Packs you'd like.

The Story So Far
One year ago we noticed a problem. The food we were buying was being wrapped in single-use plastic and flown across the world to get to us. That has a large environmental impact. But we live in London, so how were we meant to find space to grow our own food?

Then we had an idea. What if you could grow food using an everyday object, which was otherwise going to be thrown away, in space you can't use for anything else? We created Bottle Farm.

We started doing our research, and found that there were lots of ways we could improve the environmental impact of producing Bottle Farm. Often it would cost more, but our priority was to optimise for the environment.

The Bottle Stands, Grow Baskets and Grow Clips are made from a 100% recycled plastic. The Grow Pods are made from coconut coir, a waste by-product made from ground-up coconut husk. Even the box is made from 100% recycled cardboard.

But there is always a trade-off, and we discovered that using recycled material for the Plant Fuel and seed sachets would have a large carbon footprint, so we had to opt for the non-recycled material.

Our process isn’t perfect, and it does have a carbon footprint. We are pledging to offset 100% of it, and we've partnered with the amazing Carbonfund.org to do it.

We are a small team of physicists and designers with experience developing large-scale home hydroponics systems. We've spent this past year designing every part of Bottle Farm with care and attention, down to the minute details. We used a beautifully simple design process. Iteration.

We took each part needed to create a Bottle Farm, worked out what it needed to do, then designed Version 1 and made the first prototype. Then we would test it until it broke.

From this we learnt what worked and what didn't. Then we would re-design and repeat. That's how we've packed so many features and so much functionality into this little box.
