जेल इलेक्ट्रोफोरेसिस एक विधि है जो विभिन्न प्रकार के बायोलॉजिकल मोलेक्यूल को विभिन्न आकारों और वजनों के अनुसार विभाजित करने में मदद करती है। इस तकनीक में एक गैल उपयोग किया जाता है, जिसमें एक थिक जैली-जैसा पदार्थ होता है, जिसे एक इलेक्ट्रिक फ़ील्ड में प्लेट्स के बीच स्थापित किया जाता है।

जब एक नमूना जेल पर रखा जाता है, तो एक विस्तृत पूरक लोड के साथ इलेक्ट्रोफोरेसिस शुरू होता है। यह इलेक्ट्रिक फ़ील्ड बायोलॉजिकल मोलेक्यूल को एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर ले जाता है, जहां ये निर्धारित आकारों के लिए जेल द्वारा रोके जाते हैं। मोलेक्यूल विभिन्न आकारों के लिए अलग-अलग दूरी तय करते हैं, जो उनके आकारों के लिए विशिष्ट होती है।
