This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Why we decided to try to create lungs in the first place? This may sound like science fiction but we are making major advances every day that make this possible. Why is the lung so important anyway? What if we could bioengineer lungs for use in transplantation in whatever size was needed?

Joan E. Nichols is translational (bench to bedside) scientist who challenges conventional scientific dogma and works to turn science fiction into science fact.She is widely published in the fields of tissue engineering, lung response and lung engineering. Recent publications highlight use of acellular whole lung scaffolds to produce human lung tissue for clinical use. Her research team recently produced the first human bioengineered lung.
