Johann Adam Reincken was born in the Netherlands (Deventer), though he moved to Hamburg to study music with the great Heinrich Scheidemann. He then returned to Deventer for a number of years, but ended up going back to Hamburg in 1658; in 1663, upon the death of Scheidemann, Reincken took over his teacher’s position as organist at the Church of Saint Catherine, and remained in Hamburg for the rest of his life. Reincken’s reputation as an organist and as a composer was so impressive that he attracted a rather notable pupil: the 16-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach! Bach was extremely impressed by Reincken’s improvisations and pieces, so much so that he transcribed some of Reincken’s instrumental music for keyboard. Reincken was one of the very best composers of his time; thus it is little wonder that the present work reveals the hand of a master on every page.
