STORYLINE:
Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko has arrived in Damascus for a two-day visit.

On his arrival in the Syrian capital, he was greeted by Syria's minister of public works, Suheil Mohammed Abdul-Latif. The prime minister came with aid including winter clothes and medicine for the war-torn nation.

Syria is in the throes of an 11-year civil war that has displaced half the country and killed over 1 million people.

Russia has waged a military campaign in Syria since 2015, teaming up with Iran to help Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government reclaim control over most of the country after a devastating civil war.

Belarus’ authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenko, has increasingly relied on Russia’s political and financial support amid bruising Western sanctions triggered by his crackdown on domestic protests.

Golovchenko is expected to meet with the Syrian president on the second day of his visit.
