First of all, let's talk about size - it's priced among the mid-size luxury sedans, but when you sink into the back seat, it feels as spacious as a full-size model. It's extra space without the price tag of a full-size car, which is certainly a plus. On the downside, however, it's a bit rougher than some of its sleeker, more refined competitors - the aging platform and four-cylinder powertrains make it feel a little less polished on the road.
Volvo has made a few updates this year. The plug-in hybrid version is now simply called the T8 AWD, and the old “Recharge” badge is gone. And the top-of-the-line package is now called “Ultra” rather than “Ultimate.” The 2025 Volvo S90 can be purchased starting at $59,495, but with all the bells and whistles it can go up to $72,395.
Performance-wise, the B6 is decent, but the turbocharged four-cylinder engine lacks the smoothness of its competitors, especially six-cylinders. The T8 plug-in hybrid, however, gives a nice boost thanks to the electric motors, which gives it a boost and makes for a quieter ride. Even so, the engine sometimes makes some not-so-pleasant noises. The S90's handling is solid, but in exchange it gets a ride that doesn't cushion shocks very well - bumps in the road will let you know about them. And while the steering has some weight to it, it's not as precise or responsive as you'd like, which takes away a bit from the S90's sporty appeal.
Now for the interior - this is where the S90 really shines. It's filled with premium materials like open-pore wood, genuine leather, brushed metal, and high-quality plastics, creating a sleek and modern feel to the cabin. And those 14-way electrically adjustable front seats? Very comfortable, perfect for long trips. But oddly enough, Volvo added manual steering column adjustment, which seems out of place in this class since almost all competitors offer power-adjustable columns. Still, there's enough room in the S90 sedan to satisfy most drivers, and with the rear seats folded down, you get a huge amount of cargo space.
On the technical side, the S90 keeps up with the competition, relying heavily on a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen on the center console. Customizing features like heated seats or the optional display means you'll have to get comfortable with the system. While some luxury systems can be complicated, the Volvo's settings are fairly intuitive, though they do take some time to get used to. The system is Android-based, supports Apple CarPlay, and receives software updates over the air.
