How often are you judged for your accent? | Amy Xu | TEDxBGHS

Описание к видео How often are you judged for your accent? | Amy Xu | TEDxBGHS

When she first moved to the U.S., the 12-year-old Amy Xu imagined a school life just like the American teen movies. However, a miscommunication on her first day of school sparked a lifelong awareness of her accent and the biases it triggers. Exploring how accent biases impact non-native English speakers, affecting their opportunities and social interactions, she shares her experience with accents and how we can combat these prejudices to empower diverse voices. Amy is a rising senior from Prospect High School. She is a part of the theater and speech program at her high school and an active member of the community in terms of mental health awareness and linguistics advocacy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
