Getting into clawhammer lead me to find another folk instrument which I didn’t know much about - bluegrass mandolin.

As I learn more about this fascinating instrument, I’m starting to appreciate what a mandolin can offer, which also helps improve my ukulele technique.

To me, scale patterns on mandolin are more intuitive than on ukulele because the strings are all perfect 5th apart, so I find it easier to memorise the notes. And also, I get to play more notes before having to go up the neck.

Tuned in the same way as violin, so I can find some useful exercises from the violin books which are more widely available than mandolin equivalent.

Last week, I picked up a nice 2-bar lick in A with triplets with pul-off and hammer-on, introduced by David Benedict. And I finally got hooked.

Whilst learning it, my curiosity got me wondering how this same exercise could work on ukulele.

Although I had to change the key to achieve a similar exercise as the original, I think I can now appreciate the difference in a tangible way.

I hope to dig deeper with mandolin for the coming months.

I’m using Dunlop Max Grip Jazz III, carbon fibre pick for both instruments.
