Filmed on Sunday, July 23, 2023, I drive around Englewood and West Englewood in the South Side of Chicago to see what's going on.

Englewood was named for Englewood, New Jersey.

Early residents of Englewood likely would have been rail workers, many working at the Union Stock Yard.

In the 1960's and 70's the Englewood community was largely defined by the Englewood Shopping Center, a large pedestrian mall.

In the late 70s and early 80s, the mall lost its major anchor tenants.

In 1999, the city began an aggressive buyout and relocation program for remaining mall tenants, and Kennedy-King College was moved to the former site of Englewood Shopping Center in an effort to revitalize the area.

Englewood reached its peak population in 1960 with over 97,000 residents within the 3 square miles of the neighborhood.

Since then, the population of the neighborhood has been dropping dramatically. Today, 24,000 people call Englewood home.

Englewood has been known as "Chicago's Murder Capital", with more homicides being committed there than any other neighborhood in Chicago.

Gunshots are heard almost daily in Englewood and the neighborhood averages 70 homicides per year.

Englewood has one of the highest crime rates in Chicago, with 111.7 violent crimes reported per 1,000 citizens.

Only 51% of residents report that they feel safe in their neighborhood "most or all of the time."

In Englewood, 35% of housing units are vacant, and 45% of the residents are living below the poverty line.

The Englewood community has overwhelmingly supported the Democratic Party in the past three presidential elections. In 2016, 97.11% of votes were cast for Hillary Clinton. In 2020, 93.96% of votes were cast for Joe Biden.
