Asa Ichi in Japanese means "morning market". Located close to the JR Hakodate Station itself, the morning market is open usually early in the morning to about 2 in the afternoon. This market sells mostly seafood that Hakodate is known for and dominated by Giant Crabs that are plentiful in the waters around Hakodate and in general around Hokkaido Region. There are over three hundred small to large stalls in this market sprinkled in with many restaurants.

In addition to this you can do squid fishing and the chef will prepare squid shashimi with the squid you caught. Also, there is a Donburi Yokocho market with many Donburi style dishes (usually a rice bowl with different toppings) with seafood delicacies.

Hokkaido region is extremely cold during the winters, so morning market is most enjoyed if you go there during summer time. But if you are the kind who enjoys winter weather, then it the season you visit does not matter. Enjoy!!!
