While brain folding is thought to improve cognitive function by compacting the cortex into a small space, the exact mechanism has remained unclear—until now. Researchers at Harvard SEAS and collaborators in Europe demonstrated that brain folding can be explained by a simple mechanical buckling process caused by differential growth in brain tissues. Using 3D gel models that mimic fetal brain geometry, the team replicated real brain folds, offering new insights into brain development and potential links to neurological disorders.
