Is AI an Artist?
Imagine you have a bunch of polaroid photos taken by professional photographers that each have a watermark. Next, cut off the watermarks and paste them together to make a photograph. Now, sell that photograph, claim it as your own, and give none of the professional photographers credit or money. Does that seem like stealing to you?
AI isn’t real art. It generates “art” by taking bits and pieces of many artists’ art from the internet and blending it together. According to Ziv Epstein from MIT, “today’s copyright laws might not adequately apportion rights to artists when these systems are training on their styles.”1 In other words, AI devalues artists’ art using their very own art.
The art shown here is based on an AI-generated prompt that both AI and I used. I interpreted both literally and creatively and applied the warm honey skin tone described, shown in the full-length character. AI used a standard skin tone as shown in the headshot and did not fully comprehend the prompt, even though it was made by the same AI model.
AI is not creative, even when it’s working off its own prompt. As Daphne Kalotay from Harvard describes, “that sense of interplay, or the ability to react in the moment, is something that artificial intelligence can’t reproduce.”2 AI can’t feel emotion or make human connections, so it can’t create a heart-wrenching story or accurately depict a devastating situation or relatable character from a human’s eyes.
