JEE Advanced 2019 has concluded. First reactions of students are now out and for most Mathematics was said to be the toughest section. Check expert analysis, expected cut off and more here.

Though not many responses could be collected at this hour, the students who did respond said that the Chemistry section was relatively easier than the two. Mathematics questions took longer than many students expected and was dubbed to be toughest by almost all the respondents primarily due to its length. Physics was tougher than expected.

JEE Advanced 2019 - Expected Cut Off

It would be important to mention here that while 2.45 lakh students qualified for JEE Advanced 2019, only about 1.73 lakh students applied for the entrance examination. Last year, combining the supernumerary seats for girls, the merit list released was not adequate to fill all the seats. Following the debacle, JoSAA was asked to release a revised merit list.  Many expers believe that the Expected cut off would remain similar to 2018's cut off. Here is a quick look at JEE Advanced 2018 cut off. The cut off includes the revised cut off marks and also the initial cut off.

This year too, the experts feel, JoSAA may find itself facing the same debacle. Over the years the cut off has slid below the acceptable margins set by IITs. With the level of paper becoming tougher, it is expected that the cut off may slide further down.

Experts have shared the basic analysis of the paper. As per Navin C Joshi, Academic head and VP (JEE and NEET), Gradeup, "The  overall difficulty level of paper 1 was moderate. The Physics section was of moderate difficulty, Maths was moderate but lengthy, while Chemistry was the easiest of the three sections. A few questions asked in Physics were based on the conceptual understanding  of the topics. There were many application based questions asked on this subject. Students who were thoroughly prepared for JEE Advanced found the exam of moderate difficulty level." As for Paper 2, he adds - Overall difficulty level of JEE Advanced paper 2 was Moderate. As per the feedback received from the students, the Mathematics section was difficult, however, relatively easier than paper 1. Questions were highly conceptual and required good time management skills. The Chemistry section was easy and in line with the trend, while the Physics section was moderate and somewhat easier than Paper 1.

A  major change in the pattern was the absence of paragraph based questions.  Overall, aspirants found Paper 1 tougher as compared to Paper 2. The expected cut-off for general category may vary from 127- 142 marks out of the total 372 marks for admission to IITs.

As per Ms Bhuvana Anilkumar,  HOD JEE & NEET courses, T.I.M.E - JEE Advanced 2019 paper 1 was tougher than paper 2. Many of the students were unhappy about Physics in paper 1 and tried to focus on it in paper 2, resulting in not being able to give enough importance to Mathematics. They felt that Mathematics was lengthier to solve in paper 2.

Chemistry had some tricky questions to challenge the depth of knowledge and logically concluding ability. Overall pattern of JEE Advanced 2019 was very similar to that of last year; multiple correct answer questions had partial marking also similar to last year.
